God has revealed to me pastors’ wives serve a unique role and need a safe place to rest and share their journey. As with Job when he describes the pressures of life, and for these ladies being a supportive pastor’s wife can feel “like the sands of the sea weighing down” on them (Job 6:3).
My heart’s desire God faithfully provided a sweet home to offer a retreat, a place for the ladies to find rest for their souls, lift the “weight of demands or expectations” in ministry. The ladies were invited to “cast their cares” on Jesus, their burden bearer and be free to “be” – who God’s called them to be, whether they do or don’t do, uniquely God’s singular rose, set free, made whole, invited to enter His Rest and display His glory.
Following my theme for the Pastors’ Wives retreat, “Like the sands on the sea”, God answered numerous prayers for my first annual pastors’ wives prayer retreat in Marshallberg, NC! Pastors’ wives from all over NC came together (from Greensboro, Mebane, Raleigh, and Myrtle Beach) and each were blessed with new friendships, new experiences: crab fishing, shelling and eating soft-crab sandwiches. We all were given new perspective as Jesus calls us “Daughters of Abraham” inviting us to Himself to receive healing and hope in their identity (Luke 13:10-17).
We took naps, read by the water, shared recipes, swam in the ocean, took an evening walk down to the point to see the light house in the distance and to pray together by the moonlit water, sensing the Spirit’s presence through the gentle breeze.
Times of reflection alone with Jesus were focused on how to choose not to be easily offended from Proverbs 19:11, A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense. God met us there “like the sands of the sea” He did abundantly more as the ladies were filled to return home to support their spouses in ministry and encouragement for their marriages.
There were requests to do this again… so look for future dates next fall for another trip to the coast for pastors’ wives.
Quotes from the pastors’ wives from the retreat:
“God moved mightily… walk and prayers at the picnic table were awesome.”
“This was a “resting place” where I definitely “found water”! ”
“Yes, the retreat did meet my expectations. I received much needed rest, relaxation and restoration.”
